Physiotherapy

I qualified with a Diploma in Physiotherapy in March 1989 from the (then called) Nursing School at Luke's Hospital, Guardamangia. Since then I have worked in a different number of settings, from acute medicine to hydrotherapy, ortopaedics to musculoskeletal outpatients and settling down to geriatrics. I have also obtained a post-grad diploma in Gerontology and Geriatrics from the University of Malta in June 2002.

My profession as a Physiotherapist fits well into my interest in movement and motion, and also allows my creativity to come out.

Preferred areas of interest are primarily Care of the Elderly but also Orthopaedics, though not in the local setting (I dream of doing research into high velocity collisions or working alongside a racing team). I also love paeds as I find it naturally easy to work with kids (though I tend to get emotionally involved). Neurology is however, an area where lately I am devoting much time and increasing interest.

With a caseload involving a large number of patients with stroke, I have found myself developing a particular interest in the Johnstone approach developed by Margaret Johnstone in the UK. Unfortunately, this approach has not found many followers within the UK, but has been taken up and implemented in many countries across the continent. My search for more knowlege regarding the Johnstone approach involved travelling to Northumbria, and to Solothurn in Switzerland, currently the centre for spreading knowledge of this concept to physiotherapists worldwide.
